Abstract

This project strengthened the resilience of tribal communities in Andhra Pradesh by improving sustainable farming practices, promoting preventive healthcare, and increasing access to nutrition and sanitation education.

Detailed Description

With support from IDS, this initiative worked with tribal communities in Mentada Mandal of Andhra Pradesh to address challenges related to poverty, malnutrition, limited healthcare access, and low agricultural productivity. The project focused on building long-term community resilience through improved farming methods, preventive healthcare, and sanitation awareness. The agricultural component supported tribal farmers through enhanced rain-fed farming practices, seed trials, seed multiplication programs, and technical guidance aimed at increasing productivity, improving crop quality, and reducing dependence on external inputs. The program also provided support in farm planning, soil and water management, and market linkages to help increase household incomes. Alongside agricultural development, the project promoted health, nutrition, and sanitation education among children and families. Activity-based learning programs encouraged healthy behaviors and improved awareness of preventive healthcare practices. By addressing both livelihood and health challenges, the initiative aimed to reduce malnutrition, strengthen food security, improve educational outcomes, and create sustainable opportunities for tribal communities to thrive.
