Abstract

This project introduced outdoor and nature-based education programs for students in Uttarakhand, helping them develop environmental awareness, leadership skills, and livelihood opportunities through eco-tourism training.

Detailed Description

With support from IDS, the Himalayan Education Foundation (HEF) established a Nature and Outdoor Education Program for students in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. In partnership with a local mountaineering institute, the program was designed to provide practical outdoor learning experiences while preparing young people for potential careers in eco-tourism and outdoor leadership. The initiative focused on developing a region-specific outdoor education curriculum, conducting week-long training sessions, and creating educational resources in Hindi to make learning more accessible to local students and educators. Through hands-on activities, environmental education, trekking, and leadership training, students gained valuable skills while developing a deeper appreciation for the natural environment around them. By connecting education with local livelihood opportunities, the project encouraged youth to explore sustainable careers within their communities and contributed to the long-term development of environmentally responsible tourism in the Himalayan region.
