Abstract

This project promoted eco-tourism and sustainable livelihoods in Uttarakhand by providing outdoor leadership training, environmental education, and skill development opportunities for local youth.

Detailed Description

With support from IDS, the Himalayan Education Foundation (HEF) launched an Outdoor Education Program to help young people in Uttarakhand develop skills related to eco-tourism, outdoor leadership, and environmental stewardship. The initiative aimed to create meaningful livelihood opportunities within local communities, reducing the need for youth to migrate to urban areas in search of employment. Working in partnership with local mountaineering and outdoor education experts, the program provided hands-on training in trekking, outdoor safety, leadership, and environmental awareness. Participants gained practical experience through multi-day treks and outdoor learning activities using equipment funded through the project. In addition, the program supported community events such as the Birding and Forest Festival, which raised awareness about the region’s rich natural resources and highlighted the potential of eco-tourism as a sustainable source of income. By equipping local youth with valuable skills and promoting responsible tourism, the project helped strengthen community livelihoods while encouraging the conservation of the Himalayan environment for future generations.
