Abstract
This project established a computer literacy center for orphaned and underprivileged girls in Jammu and Kashmir, providing access to computers, internet, and essential IT training to improve educational and employment opportunities.
Detailed Description
Access to computer education is essential for academic and professional success, yet many orphaned and underprivileged children lack the resources needed to develop these skills. To address this gap, Borderless World Foundation (BWF) established a Computer Literacy Center at its Basera-e-Tabassum foster care home in Jammu and Kashmir.
With support from India Development Service (IDS), the project funded the purchase of 11 computers and a projector, enabling the creation of the first computer lab at the residential home. The center serves orphaned girls and young women from rural and conflict-affected communities, many of whom have lost one or both parents and are currently residing in BWF foster care homes.
Although funding limitations initially prevented the hiring of a dedicated instructor, the lab manager and program staff volunteered their time to provide basic computer education to approximately 40 students. The center offers internet access for up to 12 hours daily, allowing students to complete school assignments, improve digital literacy, and stay informed about current events and global developments.
The project aims to help beneficiaries become self-reliant by developing practical computer skills and increasing future employment opportunities. Long-term goals include expanding the computer lab, hiring qualified IT trainers, offering structured courses in Microsoft Office, database management, networking, and internet applications, and building partnerships with local businesses to provide hands-on training and career opportunities for students.
