Abstract
A climate education initiative by Ek Tara that uses illustrated children’s books to build environmental awareness and inspire sustainable habits among underprivileged children across India.
Detailed Description
Ek Tara, a charitable trust based in Kolkata, works to improve the lives of vulnerable girls and women from urban slum communities through education and skill development. As part of its broader mission, the organization also creates illustrated educational resources to make important social and environmental topics accessible to children.
With support from India Development Society (IDS), Ek Tara published “Making A World of Difference,” a 34-page illustrated children’s book focused on climate change. Designed especially for first-generation learners, the book simplifies complex environmental concepts and presents them in an engaging and easy-to-understand format.
Through colorful illustrations, interactive content, and relatable examples, the book teaches children about water conservation, pollution reduction, and sustainable living practices. It emphasizes that even small everyday actions can contribute to protecting the environment, empowering children to feel confident about making a difference.
Available in multiple languages including English, Hindi, Marathi, and Bangla, the book has reached over 85,000 children and educators across government schools and nonprofit organizations in India. It is distributed free of cost, ensuring that children from underserved communities—who often lack access to environmental education and safe green spaces—can benefit from these resources.
By combining education with creativity and accessibility, the initiative fosters environmental awareness, encourages responsible behavior, and helps build a generation of climate-conscious individuals equipped to make informed choices for a sustainable future.
