Abstract

An environmental education initiative by Green Yatra that empowers school students with practical sustainability skills and promotes climate-conscious lifestyles across communities in India.

Detailed Description

Green Yatra, a leading environmental nonprofit organization in India, works toward promoting sustainable living and ecological conservation by addressing critical issues such as climate change, pollution, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. Through its initiatives in schools, communities, and corporate sectors, the organization drives meaningful environmental awareness and action. In 2024, with support from India Development Society (IDS), Green Yatra implemented the Green Environment Education Program to nurture environmental responsibility among school children. The program focused on experiential learning, combining awareness with practical action to ensure long-term behavioral change. Through a series of interactive sessions, students were educated on key topics such as waste management, the harmful effects of single-use plastics, and sustainable lifestyle practices. The initiative successfully empowered over 241 students, with plans to reach more, encouraging them to actively engage in eco-friendly habits both at school and at home. To reinforce learning, students were provided with sustainable kits that included cloth bags, steel bottles, tiffins, bamboo toothbrushes, and plantable pencils. These tools encouraged immediate action, helping students reduce plastic usage, manage waste responsibly, and adopt environmentally conscious behaviors. The program also emphasized community involvement, inspiring students to participate in local environmental initiatives and take on leadership roles in promoting sustainability. Follow-up feedback indicated a sustained commitment among students toward eco-friendly practices, demonstrating the program’s lasting impact. By combining education, action, and community engagement, this initiative contributes to building a generation of environmentally responsible citizens committed to creating a greener and more sustainable future.
