Abstract
This project improved health awareness and sanitation practices among rag picker communities in Delhi, Noida, and Gurgaon by providing education on hygiene, healthcare, safe waste handling, and sanitation.
Detailed Description
Rag picker communities often live and work in challenging environments with limited access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and healthcare services. To address these issues, the Indian Pollution Control Association (IPCA), with support from India Development Service (IDS), implemented a health education and sanitation awareness program for rag pickers and their families in Delhi, Noida, and Gurgaon.
The project targeted approximately 500 individuals from vulnerable communities who earn their livelihood through collecting, sorting, and processing recyclable waste. Many of these families reside in godowns (warehouses) or nearby informal settlements where poor sanitation and limited awareness of hygiene practices contribute to health risks and illness, particularly among children.
Through activity-based learning and community outreach, the program educated participants on essential health and hygiene practices, including proper handwashing, dishwashing, the importance of clean drinking water, and the use of community sanitation facilities. Beneficiaries also received guidance on low-cost sanitation solutions suitable for their homes and workplaces, along with demonstrations on how to implement these practices effectively.
In addition, the project promoted safe methods for handling, processing, and disposing of waste materials, helping reduce health hazards associated with waste management work. By improving awareness and encouraging healthier behaviors, the initiative aimed to reduce illness, improve living conditions, and enhance the overall well-being of rag picker families and their children.
