Abstract

The Jhadoo Pochcha Kranti Fellowship empowered young women working as domestic helpers through leadership development, skill-building, and community engagement, helping them build confidence and create new opportunities for their future.

Detailed Description

With support from IDS, Shikshantar implemented the Jhadoo Pochcha Kranti Fellowship, a leadership and personal development program for young women from low-income communities around Udaipur, Rajasthan. Many participants worked as domestic helpers and had discontinued formal education due to economic and social challenges. The fellowship provided a 3-to-6-month learning experience for 15 young women, equipping them with practical, creative, and leadership skills. Participants received training in healthy cooking, organic farming, upcycled crafts, community arts, grassroots filmmaking, theatre, communication, facilitation, research, and project management. Through neighborhood initiatives, workshops, and community projects, they developed confidence, leadership abilities, and a stronger sense of self-worth. The program recognized the important role these women play in supporting their families while helping them discover new possibilities for personal growth and community leadership. The success of the fellowship not only transformed the lives of participants but also helped Shikshantar secure additional funding to expand and sustain the program in future years.
