Abstract
With support from IDS, SankalpTaru Foundation combined environmental conservation with community development by planting 4,000 trees across Karnataka and Uttarakhand while also providing food assistance to vulnerable communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. These initiatives strengthened rural livelihoods, promoted sustainability, and supported communities in times of need.
Detailed Description
One Tree One Meal Campaign
During the COVID-19 lockdown, SankalpTaru Foundation launched the “One Tree One Meal” campaign to address both environmental and humanitarian needs. With IDS support, 2,000 arecanut and coconut trees were planted on women-owned farms in Chikmagalur, Karnataka. In addition, 2,000 meals were distributed to stranded migrant workers in Rajasthan, providing critical support to families affected by the pandemic while creating long-term environmental benefits.
Project Protect Himalayas
IDS also supported SankalpTaru’s afforestation efforts in Uttarakhand through Project Protect Himalayas. A total of 2,000 native and fruit-bearing trees were planted to help prevent soil erosion, improve biodiversity, increase groundwater recharge, and reduce the impact of recurring forest fires. The project also created livelihood opportunities for rural families and women while contributing to environmental conservation and climate resilience in the Himalayan region.
