Abstract
Savera Foudation is putting its efforts in generating livelihood opportunities by working in the sector of soil and water conservation and allied livelihood opportunities. The recipient community belongs to Santhal Tribes who are at present engaged with mica mining, migrate and work as daily wage workers. They are dependent on rain fed paddy cultivation for food security. However, due to less rainfall for continuous three consecutive years, small and marginalized farmers are worst affected by drought in the form of food insecurity. As, the land is the main resources of these farmers in the area, soil and water conservation approach will help to secure the livelihood of the farmers. They will remains connected with natural resources for sustenance livelihood.
The proposed project is for 3 years. It will cater the need of small and marginalized farmers having 20 dismal to 1 acre land. During a detailed discussion with the community, it was noticed that water management structures and runoff water check like ponds, irrigation well, Loose Boulder Structures, and Earthen Check Dam if developed would check soil erosion and enable water availability for drinking and irrigation purpose.
Goal of the project - Creation of water management resources for benefiting small holders farmers, landless and most marginalized sections in the sector of environmental, social, and economic concern.
To ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality. (Contributing towards SDG 2)
Purpose 1:
Improved Natural Resource Management through micro watershed development for land and water management. (Resilience)
Purpose 2:
200 Small holder farmers, landless and most marginalized section engaged in various on farm, off farm and other Income Generating Activities. (Productivity )
Purpose 3:
Improved linkage with Government Schemes established
Detailed Description
The project will be implemented in one of the backward district named as 'Giridih' in Jharkhand. The Niti Ayog of Central Government classified it as backward district. Santhal Tribes are residing in 12 villages. Though they have land, but due to lack of water resources and poor linkage, their livelihood depend on mica collection and daily wage earner. Young children at the age of 17 to 18 years migrate in search of Job in cities. They are victims of unregistered labors
The present need of the community is to develop water storage structures and renovate water structures in order to create irrigation facility for second cropping. For the three consecutive years, due to less rainfall, the Government of Jharkhand has declared the district as drought prone area. The project will help around 200 farmers to engaged in farming and get rid of mica collection.
he proposed intervention will be taken in 12 villages of Mansadih Panchayat in Tisri block at Giridih district. Total household in 12 villages is 758 . The population of the target village is 5133, out of which 2561 are males and 2572 females. The area is dominated by Santhal Tribe. People in the target area solely depend on mica minning.
