Abstract

This project supported women farmers by introducing innovative Bhungroo rainwater harvesting technology, improving irrigation, expanding crop cultivation, and increasing farm incomes through sustainable agriculture.

Detailed Description

With support from IDS, the Sustainable Green Initiatives Forum (SGIF) helped women farmers strengthen their livelihoods by introducing Bhungroo, an innovative rainwater harvesting and irrigation technology. The system captures excess rainwater, stores it underground, and makes it available during dry periods, ensuring a reliable water supply for agriculture while promoting efficient water use. The project enabled farmers to cultivate larger areas of land, improve crop productivity, and reduce the risks associated with erratic rainfall and drought. By providing access to innovative irrigation solutions and agricultural knowledge, the initiative increased household incomes, strengthened food security, and reduced the need for seasonal migration in search of work. Through sustainable water management and climate-resilient farming practices, the project enhanced the long-term resilience of farming communities while conserving natural resources and promoting environmentally responsible agriculture.
