Our first presenter is: Dr. Ramesh Bellamkonda
A graduate of AIIMS, a Gastro-enterologist by profession, was practicing in the U.S. till March 1997. Though he lived in Ohio he was quite actively involved with IDS during that time.
Inspired by talk of Prof. Muhammad Yunus at a conference in Michigan, Ramesh went to Dhaka in 1996 to train under him.
Ramesh was deeply troubled by the fact that India was one of the poorest countries in the world. He was looking for a practical way to involve himself full time to hopefully eventually do large scale poverty alleviation in India.
After 21+ years he eventually decided to leave his medical practice in Ohio and went to India to start a microcredit program in Bangalore, as a practical way to do large scale poverty alleviation.
Upon his request, a Registered Public Charitable Trust “Bharatha Swamukti Samsthe” (BSS) was started in 1997 for the purpose of doing large scale poverty alleviation work. He has served as its Trustee and a Governor right from its inception, and he ran the day to day affairs of the Trust from the beginning. Effective 1st of April 2008, the Microfinance of the Trust was taken over by BSS Microfinance Private Limited (BSS NBFC) where he served as Managing Director until the BSS microfinance was bought over by the Kotak Bank.
