Abstract
A youth livelihood and skill development initiative in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, providing vocational training to marginalized youth—especially women—to promote self-reliance, income generation, and social transformation.
Detailed Description
Banwasi Seva Ashram, a Gandhian-inspired organization working in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh since 1954, focuses on empowering tribal and marginalized communities in one of India’s most underdeveloped regions. Despite rich natural resources, the area faces severe socio-economic challenges, including youth migration, unemployment, and vulnerability to exploitation.
To address these issues, and with support from India Development Society (IDS), the organization initiated a youth skill development program targeting school dropouts. The project aimed to equip young people—especially women—with practical vocational skills that could lead to sustainable livelihoods and reduce migration.
The program successfully trained over 150 youth in various income-generating activities. These included fruit and vegetable preservation (such as pickles and processed foods), mushroom cultivation, dress making, and basic computer skills. The training combined hands-on learning with practical guidance on production, pricing, and small-scale entrepreneurship.
These interventions have led to tangible economic benefits within the community. Participants have been able to start small home-based enterprises, generating steady income and improving their financial independence. For instance, mushroom cultivation has enabled women to earn a regular monthly income, while food processing and tailoring have opened up local market opportunities.
The impact of the program is reflected in stories like Savita Devi, who turned her pickle-making skills into a small business by fulfilling orders from her community, and Champa, who gained confidence and financial independence through tailoring. Such examples highlight how targeted skill development can transform livelihoods, enhance self-confidence, and empower individuals—especially women—to become self-reliant.
By channeling the energy of youth into productive and sustainable activities, the initiative not only strengthens local economies but also fosters dignity, confidence, and long-term community development.
