Goonj

Local resources work to improve rural village

Location: Bihar

Surha Bhita is one of the most backward villages in Saharsa district of Bihar. Goonj's comprehensive village development initiative is called Neev, which means foundation. Neev is a program that addresses difficult rural problems with the participation of rural communities, their wisdom and resources. Rather than putting the parties into donor-beneficiary relationships, Neev makes everyone a stakeholder, and traditional wisdom and community labor become the components of development work. Goonj provides basic material in the form of a family kit to each family as a reward for their labor. The family kits are assembled by Goonj workers and contain clothes, footwear, cloth sanitary napkins, woolens, toys, vegetable bags, and sujni.
